What Are Advantages of Geomembrane in Road Construction

1. Project Overview

This case takes the 18.6-kilometer E4 Highway Expansion Project in Northern Europe as the research object. Launched in 2025, the project covers subgrade reconstruction, pavement renewal and roadside drainage upgrading. The local area suffers from high groundwater levels, heavy summer rainfall and severe winter frost heave. The original road was plagued by persistent defects including subgrade softening, uneven settlement, pavement cracking and rutting, mostly caused by rainwater infiltration and groundwater erosion. To solve these long-standing road diseases and prolong road service life, the project adopted 1.5mm HDPE geomembrane combined with geotextile to build a multi-layer waterproof and isolation system for the subgrade and drainage facilities. One year of field monitoring proves that the road maintains stable structural performance without obvious damage, fully demonstrating the practical value of geomembranes in road construction.

2. Core Advantages of Geomembrane in Road Construction (Verified by the Project)

2.1 Excellent Impermeability, Effectively Preventing Subgrade Water Damage

Water damage is the leading cause of subgrade failure in traditional roads. Unobstructed rainwater infiltration softens foundation soil, reduces bearing capacity and triggers settlement; seasonal frost heave and spring thaw-induced mud pumping further damage pavement and threaten driving safety. The HDPE geomembrane applied in this project features ultra-low permeability and stable waterproof performance. Laid between subgrade and base course, it forms a closed barrier that blocks rainwater and groundwater penetration, keeping subgrade soil dry and stable. It also lines drainage ditches to avoid surrounding soil and groundwater pollution. Project data verifies that the geomembrane effectively stabilizes subgrade water content and completely eliminates frost heave and mud pumping problems.

2.2 Reliable Isolation and Stabilization, Reducing Uneven Subgrade Settlement

Road structures consist of subgrade, base and surface courses with distinct material properties. Without isolation measures, long-term vehicle loads and natural erosion cause mixing and displacement of different soil and material layers, leading to structural disorder and uneven settlement. Geomembranes provide reliable isolation and anti-mixing functions, separating soft foundation soil, gravel base and asphalt surface layers to maintain structural stratification stability. In the E4 project’s soft soil foundation sections, composite geomembrane significantly improves subgrade stress uniformity, controlling differential settlement within 3mm, which fully meets highway standards and avoids pavement rutting and bumpiness.

2.3 High Tensile Strength, Reinforcing Road Structural Stability

Composite geomembranes compounded with geotextiles possess outstanding tensile strength, tear resistance and flexible deformability. They effectively disperse concentrated vehicle loads, share subgrade stress, and improve the overall shear resistance and structural stability of roads. In the E4 Highway’s slope and transition sections, the geomembrane resists lateral soil pressure and water erosion, prevents slope collapse and soil loss, and stabilizes road shoulders. Different from rigid reinforcement materials, it can adapt to slight foundation deformation without cracking, providing long-term stable protection for road structures.

2.4 Durable and Corrosion-Resistant, Reducing Long-Term Maintenance Costs

Roads operate in complex outdoor environments, where acidic and alkaline substances in soil and water corrode traditional building materials and shorten road life. HDPE geomembrane has excellent chemical stability, corrosion resistance and anti-aging performance, resisting degradation from long-term exposure to soil, water and climate changes. It can maintain stable performance for over 30 years. Compared with untreated road sections that require large-scale maintenance every 3 to 5 years, roads with geomembrane protection extend service life by 15 to 20 years and reduce annual maintenance costs by more than 60%, delivering remarkable economic benefits.

2.5 Simple Construction and Eco-Friendly, Improving Project Construction Efficiency

Geomembranes are lightweight, flexible and easy to cut and lay, supporting large-scale rapid construction. Its construction process is highly compatible with conventional road procedures, causing no delays to the overall project progress and achieving nearly 100% on-site material utilization with minimal waste. Environmentally friendly, geomembranes block the leakage of road surface pollutants and harmful soil substances, preventing groundwater and soil contamination along the route. This fully meets the green construction requirements of modern highway engineering.

3. Project Application Results and Conclusion

After one year of operation, the renovated E4 Highway shows no pavement cracking, rutting, subgrade settlement or frost heave diseases. The application of geomembrane successfully solves common road quality problems in high-groundwater and cold regions, realizing integrated improvements in structural stability, durability, economic efficiency and environmental protection.

In conclusion, geomembranes have irreplaceable comprehensive advantages in road construction. Their excellent impermeability, isolation, reinforcement, corrosion resistance and eco-friendly properties effectively optimize subgrade structure, extend road service life and cut long-term operating costs. As an efficient and economical engineering material, geomembranes are worthy of wide promotion in highway reconstruction, new rural road projects and soft foundation road treatment.
